Office of Research and Economic Development (Updated March, 2008)

The University of North Texas (UNT) announces a nationwide search to recruit several professionals in the area of research development, technology transfer, and development and management of UNT Discovery Park.

Founded in Denton, Texas in 1890, the University of North Texas is the flagship of the University of North Texas System, the fourth largest university in Texas and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.  UNT enrolls more than 34,000 students, and is located in the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) Metroplex, a vibrant region with a population of over six million people.  DFW is home to 22 Fortune 500 companies, giving it one of the highest concentrations of corporate headquarters in the U.S.  Denton is a dynamic, growing city in the DFW Metroplex, recently picked as one of the top places to live.  Important strategic priorities of UNT are to expand its research enterprise, build a research park, and contribute to the economic development of its region, the state and the nation. The university has developed an ambitious plan to create Research Clusters in selected areas to promote multi-disciplinary research, creativity and innovation.

 

Technology Transfer, Economic Development and Research Park

Director of Research Park and Technology Transfer
We are seeking a dynamic individual with experience in research park development and management to initiate the design and development of UNT’s Discovery Park on a 284 acre site. The site is also home to the UNT College of Engineering, Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART), Computing and IT Center, and Department of Learning Technologies.  The Director’s duties will include development of real estate, obtaining funding from Government and non-Government sources, and developing partnerships with local governments, businesses and other stakeholders.  S/he will develop and implement strategies to foster incubators and attract start-up companies, as well as establish relationships with venture capital firms and individuals, the North Texas Regional Center for Innovation and Commercialization, and other government and non-government agencies for financing including Texas Emerging Technology Fund.  In addition, the Director will serve as the UNT’s Patent and Copyright Officer and oversee the Intellectual Property/Technology/Patent development and commercialization processes for the University.  The Director will report to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and will lead a professional team to meet the university’s goals.
 
The successful candidate must have demonstrated knowledge and experience in some or all of the above areas and must hold a masters degree in science, engineering, business, or a related field. Experience in business development or R&D and an earned doctorate in science, engineering, or a related field are preferred. (Target Date: May 15, 2008)

Research Development Team

UNT plans to build a Research Development Team (RDT) to support its faculty in the development of research, education and training proposals. The Team’s primary responsibility will be to expand UNT’s external funding, particularly federal research grants. RDT will promote new and junior faculty, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research teams, research affinity groups, and long-term proposal planning. The Team will help develop research partnerships across the UNT colleges and departments, with the UNT Health Science Center, and with other institutions in the DFW area, Texas and the nation.

The team will have extensive expertise and experience in information resources, training programs, and proposal development (including writing, editing, formatting and design) to help new faculty, faculty inexperienced in successful proposal writing, faculty expanding into new program areas, and faculty building teams and developing proposals for centers and institutes. RDT will also help in creating special programs to aid in diversifying research across the campus, developing strategic partnerships, and providing special assistance to groups that are under-represented in research at UNT as well as nationwide.

We plan to hire several professionals with complementary expertise in S&T, non-S&T and the fine arts areas. The individuals in these positions will have a broad range of experience related to proposal development and writing, proposal strategic planning, identification of funding opportunities, knowledge of funding agency culture and investment priorities, and successful research and education models that can enhance proposal competitiveness.

Director of Research Development
The Director will lead and manage the Office of Research Development and will represent the office university-wide among faculty, departments and colleges.  The Director will assist in research center level partnership development and will assist in reviewing, editing and writing major research proposals. The Director will have a demonstrated history of writing and coordinating successful grant proposals, preferably in STEM areas. This person will also develop, organize, and present faculty grant writing workshops and seminars and will provide strategic planning assistance. 

This position requires a bachelor’s degree with ten years of experience in a scientific and/or technical research environment or a master’s degree with eight years experience. Experience must include demonstrated success in proposal development in STEM areas for federal and other funding agencies and/or having held scientific or engineering positions in industry where the development and writing of research and/or technical proposals was a significant component of the responsibilities. Associate Director of Research Development
The Associate Director will have a demonstrated history of writing and coordinating successful funding proposals in the social sciences, humanities, and/or fine arts area. S/he will report to the Director of Research Development and will work with the faculty, the department chairs and deans primarily in non-STEM areas, to develop proposals for submission to government agencies, foundations, and not-for profit organizations. 

The position requires a bachelor’s degree with seven years of experience or a master’s degree with five years of experience in writing successful proposals and ability to attract external resources in social science, humanities and/or fine arts. (Target Date: June 16, 2008)

Assistant Director for Proposal Development and Design
The Assistant Director will have experience in professional and technical writing, editing, publications, and design.  S/he will facilitate the development and presentation of high quality funding proposals in terms of content, design, graphical and visual presentation, formatting, and competitiveness.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree with five years experience or a master’s degree with three years experience in development and presentation of high quality funding proposals in terms of content, style, design, graphical and visual presentation, formatting and layout, and competitiveness. (Target Date: June 16, 2008)
